NIRVANA is a movie, for sure – if Vadim, Antonioni or Kubrick had made pop records back in the late 1960s, they might have sounded somewhat like the delights on offer here. The imagery, both expressed and implied, is most exquisite. A pair of dolly birds giggling frothily in a booth at the “Speak”. The day-glo sunset from the balcony of a Monte Carlo casino. Tantalizing intrigue amongst the international jet set. NIRVANA’s is a uniquely cinematic soundscape.
This is America’s first real opportunity to dip into the chocolate box that is NIRVANA. The group’s original stateside releases were limited to the Simon Simopath album and a trio of unsuccessful singles, and it’s not hard to imagine that back then, their records were considered too European – too Continental, even – for American tastes.
That was then, this is now. NIRVANA was both completely of its time, and curiously timeless, because their central strength is the songwriting. Beautifully fragile as in ‘Pentecost Hotel’, indescribably sad as ‘Lonely Boy’, insidiously off-beat as in ‘St John’s Wood Affair’. It makes sense that the main protagonists, Patrick Campbell-Lyons and Alex Spyropoulos, first met as jobbing songsmiths, because composition and craft are central to the NIRVANA aesthetic.
Neither of the participants was an Englishman, but their records have the heavy accent of the very best Britpop of the day, with London’s top session crew to help things along. Dollops of jazz, an angelic chorale and strings going for baroque, the artful splendour of the arrangements combine with an emblematic production style - heavily limited drums on ‘All Of Us’, the outrageous phasing of ‘Rainbow Chaser’ (a cherished oldie in Europe to this day) – that is completely intoxicating.
Patrick and Alex may give us exotic locales and quixotic characters, but they also
sing of the everyday and the mundane, the sad and the pathetique. There’s an innate sense of melancholy one derives from the gamin vocals and the mournful melodies. It’s most perfectly poised in ‘Tiny Goddess’, something of a standard, given that this splendid tune was also recorded by the likes of Francoise Hardy and others.
The biographical details behind NIRVANA are intriguing enough – Irish native Campbell-Lyons journeying to London to take part in the beat boom as lead singer with R&B outfit the Second Thoughts, who wandered Europe, helping to ignite a songwriting muse that saw Patrick collaborate with future producer-of-note Chris Thomas. But a more substantial partnership bloomed upon meeting Greek film student Alex Spyropoulos.
Both singers and keyboard players, the new partners’ combined Celtic and Hellenic humours inspired the formation of NIRVANA: pop confected with jazz and classical textures. The background in song-smithy and an altogether progressive approach to the art of making records saw the new act swiftly inked to Chris Blackwell’s Island Records, an organization moving beyond their bread-and-butter bluebeat toward the psychedically-inclined rock of that halcyon summer of ’67.
NIRVANA was a group of sorts at first, and that was how their first album, the gorgeous, thematic Story Of Simon Simopath, was presented, along with sundry, cleverly devised live performances that were the talk of the town. Chart action for the group’s various singles was intermittent, even if the pirates loved them, and the act had devolved to the core of Alex and Patrick by the time of the sequel - and NIRVANA’s masterpiece – All Of Us, one of the best albums of the late 1960s, in any land.
Blackwell was less impressed with their progress however, and passed on the band’s third album, which they were free to take elsewhere – and they did. However, Black Flower aka Dedicated to Markos III proved a hapless victim of marketplace confusion, and there would thus be a considerable gap before the last two vintage long-players credited to NIRVANA at the dawn of the 1970s, Songs Of Love & Praise and Local Anaesthetic.
So now, almost a half-century later, we have Cult, the Young Persons Guide To NIRVANA and what a delirious romp through their remarkable catalogue it is. Because they were effectively a studio-only exercise, NIRVANA have never really received their due amongst the rock literati, and consequently, beyond the original listenership, their magic has been the province of a knowing cabale of true believers. Let’s hope Cult does its intended job, and shows America where true NIRVANA lies

Thank You Kindly
The Kingston Trio was the reason I became a musician. Their music motivated me to put in the effort to learn how to play guitar and banjo. The songs they sang inspired me to write songs of my own. I pretty much idolized them from the age of ten til I was about fourteen. I've continued to listen to and dig their catalogue for more than 45 years now.
I met Nick, Bob and John at a concert they played in 1967. I got to go backstage and have a soda with all three of them. Spending a half hour with the Kingston Trio was one of the biggest thrills of my life.
In 2011 the Kingston Trio received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy. Inspired by that, I started recording some of their songs in my home studio, Lumania.
Here is the result: Twelve songs that I learned from Kingston Trio records. Some of them are almost clones of the original arrangements and some have been reshaped a bit. I purposely avoided tackling any of their many hits and I did my best to honor the legacy of the men who gave me the greatest gift I can imagine, the love of making music.
So here's to Dave Guard, Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and John Stewart along with the two bass players who recorded and toured with them for ten years, David "Buck" Wheat and Dean Reilly. It was a real pleasure, boys. Thank you kindly.

The San Francisco Oracle
Authored by Mr Allen Cohen
A complete copy of the legendary psychedelic underground newspaper originally published in the Haight Ashbury during the Summer of Love.
The San Francisco Oracle, published in the Haight Ashbury from 1966 to 1968, was one of the most unique and beautiful publications of the '60s. It is remembered for its extraordinary graphic design by major San Francisco artists, its rainbow colors and the cultural explorations and breakthroughs in its articles, interviews and poetry.
This book contains each and every page of all 12 issues printed - in all their original brilliance
"If the New Age Movement is a religion, these idealistic explorations into the personal experience and social implications of 'mind expansion' are part of its cannon. From the Aquarian Age to Native American shamanism, Eastern mysticism, communal living, utopian revolution, sexual liberation, ecological awareness and the socio-spiritual implications of LSD, The Oracle provides source documents of an eclectic spirituality and social philosophy that continue to exert a widespread - albeit subtle - influence on American society."
- The San Francisco Chronicle
"The Fantastic graphics of The Oracle, many wrapped around pages or double spreads of text, were mostly printed in black and white, but many glowed in deep reds, fuchsias, blues, oranges and yellows produced in a printing process now extinct. Regent Press has brought them back to life through what must have been maddeningly laborious handwork on the press; here indeed is the old Oracle in all its opulence. Open any page and you are back on the streets of the Haight Ashbury in as time when that tiny urban spot was the Olympus of the newborn world."

Childbirth is Ecstasy
Authored by Allen Cohen
Photographs by Stephen Walzer
"There would be no war if every man received his son onto this planet in this way and had known his wife in this act of ecstasy."
-From Childbirth is Ecstasy, by Allen Cohen
Allen Cohen was the editor and founder of the legendary San Francsio Oracle and the last of the beat poets. Allen was a visionary who was often way ahead of his time. The Human Be In and the Summer of love in San Francisco were visions from the mind of Allen Cohen. In 1969 Allen closed the Oracle and moved up north to live communally. It was during this time they started to live off the land and raise a family.
Childbirth is Ecstasy is the Aquarian answer to childbirth. It is a document of the birth of Allen and Laurie's son River. It is the first picture book of live birth set to the words of Allen Cohen and the photos of Stephen Walzer. This book is a complete restoration of the 1971 classic. The book was restored using all of the original photos and layouts from the original publication. Every photo and text has been relayed exactly as it was in the 1971 issue..

Peter Daltrey—The Morning Set
Artist/Band: Peter Daltrey and Damien Youth
THE MORNING SET
A new Peter Daltrey album is always an exciting event in itself: the expectation of it being another alliance with Louisiana's finest, Damien Youth, whets the appetite further still.
Although this is Daltrey's eleventh solo outing, it's his third with the American folk-psych songsmith - ably assisted by Joe Pesci, Dave 'Fingers' Carver and Peter's son Oli -- and this time under the flag of The Morning Set. Arguably, it's the strongest, conventional Daltrey/Youth set to date; conventional only in the sense that their best work until now, the largely-acoustic "Nevergreen", was more of a thematic piece best enjoyed as a Whole. "The Morning Set" contains ten songs of a startlingly-accessible nature. The phrase 'radio-friendly' springs to mind, but don't let that fool you. As immediate as these songs are, they improve with repeated playing, revealing a greater depth thanks to the dependable union of Peter Daltrey's lyrical- and Damien Youth's melodic-mastery. In Youth, Daltrey has found the ideal creative foil. Much like his Kaleidoscope/Fairfield Parlour compadre Eddy Pumer, both share the same happy knack of pulling that killer hook out of the bag when required. As the promotional strap line has it: "Yer going to be singing these songs forever!"
Daltrey's favoured themes of nostalgia and Americana are very much in evidence again and are given an even greater authenticity thanks to Youth's input. The opener, "Waking up in Ellerslie", all twelve-string guitars, wailing harp and sweet folk-rock optimism, is further enhanced by the presence of another of the Daltrey progeny, daughter Faye, on backing vocal. The filmic "The Hymn of the Singing Man", with its Zimmerman drawl and brooding Link Wray guitar trills, could almost be a sonic sibling of Dylan's "Ballad of a Thin Man" reworked for the Tarantino generation. However, for every darker moment, we're treated to breezier bursts of tune smithery, such as "Wheels of Romance", which bears all the deftness of touch that was Fairfield Parlour's trademark.
Has Peter Daltrey's voice ever sounder better than on "Sleeping with Sylvia Plath"? Maybe not. All the emotion, experience and quiet assuredness of a man now in his fifth decade of this recording lark coalesces in almost seven-minutes of claustrophobic urgency; Oli Daltrey's snaking lead guitar adding to the dark vision. Damien Youth assumes lead vocal duties on two songs: "Phantom Wheels" and "Joe, don't listen to The Man", the latter being one of the album's many highlights, with Youth's Beck-like intonation (that's Hansen and not Jeff, God forbid.) "Blue Girl Eyes" ranks up there too and features some wonderful, chiming guitar work, redolent of Peter Buck in a pre-Warners R.E.M.
"The Ballad of Pilgrim State" is an account of Allen Ginsberg's grim, early family life. Its compelling, but chilling intensity is countered by the positively joyful "Breakfast with Sinatra", which brings the album to a close on a cheerier note Consistently and satisfyingly impressive, and one can't help but look forward already to the next offering by The Morning Set; a prospect even more mouthwatering than the picture of a lovely, greasy fry-up on this album's CD label. Although I hear he could make a mean Eggplant Parmigiana, I'll bet old Frank wouldn't have turned his nose up if he were offered a fried slice to go with it....

John York was in the Byrds from 1968-1970 through the Ballad of Easy Rider period. Kim Fowley legendary producer songwriter. Kim wrote songs for the Byrds with Skip Battin after John left the band. It is only natural that two would collaborate on this new cd West Coast Revelation.
West Coast Revelation is a very special album, in that is tells the story of the 60s through songs and words.
John York and Kim Fowley flowed with this revelation as it ran through the streets of L.A. in the mid-sixties; a time of creativity that remains unparalleled. Kim, the wild-eyed prophet, gave momentum to the revelation while John York became its gentle musical craftsman; a skilled artisan. From Alley-Oop to The Byrds, they helped shape and form the times, unseen, sometimes unwashed and unnoticed, they both were there riding its rapids. Because they were there, we can now hear the stories and re-experience the passion of it because, like Kim says on the opening track, "Angels and Trucks,"angels never die."
West Coast Revelation is an opportunity to sit in on a rare front-porch session of songs and storytelling. The songs herein are new, unique and original musings of the times; then and now. They steer us through the stories of their times with words from Kim and music from John. This album captures the essence those 'silver sixties,' but the songs refuse to be bound by time. Songs like "Psychedelic," "Rock and Roll Is Another Name For Freedom," drive us closer to the eye of the diamond of the West Coast Revelation and the wild, cosmic spirit of those times; It's a revelation which can never be captured, but can experienced through prophets and artisans like Kim Fowley and John York.
